Penguins of Madagascar (2014) review
After stealing the show from their fellow zoo-mates in the Madagascar trilogy, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private finally have their own film.
Part origin story, mostly new James Bond-esque adventure, this sees the elite squad of Spheniscidae take their leave of Circus Zaragoz to launch an assault on Fort Knox.
Their quarry – the last remaining Cheezy Dibbles vending machine. However, they may have bitten off more than they can chew, as lying in wait is vengeful octopus Dave (John Malkovich).
Angered at being cast aside for more cute and cuddly attractions at zoo’s around the world, he is hell-bent on turning all the world’s penguins into monsters via his Medusa Serum.
Despite a sense of deja vu about proceedings (Puss in Boots’ former-friend-out-for-revenge gambit, Despicable Me 2’s genetics-altering liquid), Penguins still provides plenty of entertainment for cinemagoers of all ages.
Kids will delight in the quartet’s mix of slapstick and inventive plans, while parents can enjoy some brilliant vocal casting (Benedict Cumberbatch as an elite wolf-agent, documentarian Werner Herzog sending up his own Encounters at the End of the World), a rich vein of delightful wordplay and a high gag count, which brings to mind the work of the Zucker brothers in the likes of Flying High and The Naked Gun trilogy. Where else can you hear lines such as “these hosen are riding up my Bundesliga”, or take delight from a running gag involving inserting actors’ names into the dialogue (“Charlize they’re on the machine . .. Halle bury them . . . Drew, Barry, more power,” Dave screams at his cephalopod henchmen).
A breathless, relentless, hilarious comedy chase movie that takes in such exotic locations as Venice, Shanghai and central Kentucky, Penguins may be slightly cheesy, but it’s deliciously subversive all the same.
