Ted (2012) movie review
Until now Seth MacFarlane has been known for his television work. As the creator of Family Guy, American Dad and the Cleveland Show he’s been entertaining Sunday night audiences for over a decade. Ted however is his first foray into feature films, and if it succeeds you may see his career take a completely different turn.
When John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) was 8 years old he wished the Teddy Bear he received as a Christmas gift was alive, and the next morning he found out his wish had come true. Ted was the talk of the country and gained a level of celebrity never before seen from a stuffed toy. Flash forward 27 years and John and Ted are still best friends, which is causing a rift between John and his girlfriend Lori Collins (Mila Kunis). She loves John and wants their relationship to go to the next level, but she feels that she’s constantly coming in second place. John decides that it is time for Ted to move out and make his own way in the world, unfortunately it doesn’t change anything and John soon finds himself having to grow up or lose the woman he loves.
Ted is perhaps on the most unique comedies to come out in a long time. The story is fresh, and there really is nothing to compare it to. The humor of the movie is pure Seth MacFarlane. If you watch his weekly cartoons Sunday nights on Fox you’ll recognize a lot of similar jokes, including potty humor, but it doesn’t get tiring. Like he does on Family Guy he pushes the boundaries of good taste at times and some of his jokes are sure to cause a little controversy, but you find yourself laughing so hard that you don’t mind. When watching this movie one has to wonder if John’s character isn’t partly modeled after Seth MacFarlane himself, after all it’s pretty obvious that Seth is a big kid too. He remembers the past fondly, and there are plenty of jokes surrounding 80’s culture. All of that being said, Ted may not be for everyone. It’s sure to be a huge hit among younger audiences, but his brand of humor is not something everyone will enjoy. And whatever you do, make sure you are not taking a kid to see it.
Seth MacFarlane hit it out of the ballpark with this one, and if you enjoy his previous body of work you are sure to enjoy this one as well. If you are looking for a few laughs and a good time, make sure you see it.
