Bad Santa 2 (2016) review
This film should come with a warning for the easily offended among the cinema going public. If you’ve seen the first one then you know what to expect but if you haven’t be warned – there is nothing whatsoever PC about this film. The trailer has been doing the rounds online and certainly gives a pretty good inkling of the tone and if you don’t like copious amounts of sex, swearing and completely inappropriate insults then I would advise you to give this a wide berth.
If, on the other hand, you can take this as the anti-Christmas movie and a parody to all the cheery festive fare on offer, then you might find that you enjoy this somewhat. It’s hard to believe that its 13 years since the original but seemingly time flies when you are an alcoholic, sex addicted seasonal criminal Santa a la Billy Bob Thornton’s character here. He reprises the role of Willie and he is as shambolic as he ever was. Working menial jobs and with final demands piling up, he decides to end it all until a grown up Thurman Merman (Kelly also reprising his role from the first movie) shows up with a package that arrived at his house for Willie. It contains a phone, money and the opportunity to rip off a Charity on Christmas Eve to the tune of $2 million. However it involves working with his old nemesis Marcus (Cox, also returning) and his mother Sunny (Bates) – a woman whom he completely reviles.
Of course the heist backdrop is just a catalyst for the puerile and inappropriate jokes and scenarios that pepper this movie. Despite Santa featuring in the title there is nothing heart-warming about this. Instead it finds the lowest common denominator and manages to sink even lower. Basically it is exactly like the first movie in that respect. What it does lack that the first movie had in spades is the surprise element. We now know just how low Willie will go so it is harder for them to push the envelope.
There is little point in my trying to give this a proper critique. I could talk about the performances and the script and the soundtrack and blah, blah but at the end of the day this is designed to appeal to anyone who likes some very low brow humour with a seasonal spin. Obviously many people find this appealing given the box office takings of the first one and – let’s face it – in such a serious time we all sometimes need a little filthy humour in our lives. But just be warned – this takes it to the next level. It’s not quite as good as the first one (sequels never are in fairness) but definitely in the same vein so if you hated that then you won’t like this. If you didn’t see the first one and like frat boy humour that is completely politically incorrect then you’ll like this. And if you pop along and find yourself deeply offended well…we did warn you!
